In the vast, simulated dock platform, there's no one in sight—only a rail-type gantry electric crane continuously moving back and forth, precisely lifting a pair of containers from a truck and placing them on the yard with seamless efficiency. This is the scene that unfolded as hundreds of international customers from over 100 terminal and shipping companies gathered at the Zhenchang Island base in Shanghai’s Yangtze River estuary two days ago and yesterday. They were there to witness the company’s independently developed environmentally-friendly container handling system, which simulates an automated terminal operation.
Guan Yuxian, President of Zhenhua Port Machinery, expressed pride at the event, stating that this fully automated system marks a breakthrough in the industry. He emphasized its revolutionary impact on terminal logistics, significantly boosting operational efficiency. According to him, this technological achievement reinforces the company's commitment to innovation as its core competitive advantage.
As ultra-large vessels continue to increase in number, traditional port operations relying on manual machinery struggle to keep up with the rising demand for container freight. In the 1990s, ports like Rotterdam in the Netherlands and Hamburg in Germany pioneered early automation by using AGV systems powered by internal combustion engines. However, high navigation costs limited the widespread adoption of such systems.
In response, Shanghai Zhenhua Port Machinery (Group) Co., Ltd. partnered with Shanghai Jiaotong University, Tongji University, and Shanghai Maritime University to form a "production, research, and education" alliance. After years of dedicated research, they successfully developed a new, efficient, and cost-effective automated loading and unloading system. The technology has already secured several patents both domestically and internationally.
According to calculations by relevant parties, if this system is implemented at a terminal berth, it could increase yard storage by 25%, boost production efficiency by at least 50%, and significantly reduce daily operating costs. To accelerate real-world implementation, Guan Yuxian announced that the first users would be able to test the system for free, ensuring its practical perfection as soon as possible.
