This is the scene that hundreds of international customers from over 100 terminal and shipping companies around the globe witnessed when they visited the Zhenchang Island base in Shanghai’s Yangtze River estuary two days ago and yesterday. They were there to observe the company’s independently developed environmentally friendly container handling system, which simulates an automated terminal operation. Guan Yuxian, President of Zhenhua Port Machinery, proudly stated at the event that this groundbreaking fully automated container handling system marks a revolutionary step for terminal logistics. It significantly boosts operational efficiency and represents another milestone in the company’s commitment to technological innovation as its core competitive advantage. As the size of vessels continues to grow, traditional port machinery-based loading and unloading operations are struggling to keep up with the rising demand for container freight. In response, ports like Rotterdam in the Netherlands and Hamburg in Germany introduced early automated terminals in the 1990s, using AGV systems powered by internal combustion engines. However, due to high navigation costs, these systems never gained widespread adoption. In contrast, Shanghai Zhenhua Port Machinery (Group) Co., Ltd. partnered with Shanghai Jiaotong University, Tongji University, and Shanghai Maritime University to form a "production, study, and research" alliance. After years of dedicated research, they successfully developed a new, efficient, and cost-effective automated loading and unloading system for terminals. The technology has already secured multiple patents both domestically and internationally. According to estimates from relevant parties, if Zhenhua Port Machinery’s automated solution is implemented at a similar terminal berth, yard capacity could increase by 25%, production efficiency by at least 50%, and daily operating costs would be significantly reduced. To ensure their automated solution is refined and widely adopted, Guan Yuxian announced that the first user of the system will have access to it free of charge.
