Repair and Maintenance for Outdoor Heaters

6 minute read | Patio Heaters

Whether you're using outdoor patio heaters for your business or personal enjoyment, they are a great way to extend the comfort of your outdoor space even when the temperature drops. To ensure your investment in outdoor heating remains reliable and efficient, regular maintenance is essential. At AEI, we focus on providing top-notch customer service and quality replacement parts for all the outdoor heating appliances we carry. By replacing worn-out components and conducting routine inspections, you can significantly extend the lifespan of your heaters.

All of our Patio Comfort products are built to high standards, but no appliance is immune to wear and tear over time. Common issues that users often encounter with patio heaters include:

  • Soot buildup in pilot feed tubes
  • Pilot light fails to ignite
  • Low flame from the burner
  • Frozen regulator or propane tank
  • Pilot goes out on high or low settings
  • Heater won't ignite and burns low
  • Propane smell during startup

Patio Heater Care & Maintenance

These problems are typical with regular use, and many can be easily fixed with some basic troubleshooting. Others may require professional repair. Regular maintenance not only helps prevent costly repairs but also ensures your heater runs safely and efficiently. It's important to keep your unit in good working order so it continues to provide warmth and comfort without interruption.

One of the first things to check is the gas cylinder. Make sure it’s full before attempting to start the heater. If the tank is full but the heater still doesn’t ignite, the ignition system may need attention. Listen for a hissing sound, which could indicate a problem with the igniter. If you hear gas entering the burner but no spark, the issue may be with the fuel delivery system.

Heaters with electric ignition systems rely on a spark to light the fuel. If you see a spark but the heater doesn’t light, there might be a blockage preventing the fuel from reaching the spark. In such cases, you can try lighting the heater manually with a butane lighter. If that doesn’t work and the tank has fuel, the fuel line might be clogged or disconnected.

Regularly inspect the ignition system for signs of soot, corrosion, or damage. If you operate your patio heaters for customers, it’s best to perform checks early in the day to avoid last-minute issues. When working on the ignition system, always make sure the fuel supply is turned off to prevent accidental ignition.

The fuel regulator is another key component that requires regular attention. This small pipe connects the gas tank to the burner and should be checked for cracks, corrosion, or blockages. A faulty regulator can lead to serious safety hazards, so it’s important to maintain it properly. If you notice any issues, don’t attempt to use the heater until the problem is resolved.

Finally, don’t forget to clean the gas pipe regularly. While rare, blockages can occur, especially after long periods of storage. Remove the pipe and blow air through it to clear any debris. If needed, you can flush it with hot water, but make sure it’s completely dry before reattaching it.

Outdoor heaters are generally simple and reliable, but they do require consistent care to function safely and effectively. Replacing old or damaged parts can help you get the most out of your investment and ensure your heater remains a dependable source of warmth. Proper maintenance not only improves performance but also enhances safety and longevity.
