Police officers and firefighters collect water for residents of Flint, MI

Excerpts from the DailyHerald.com:

Residents from surrounding suburbs are uniting to support those affected by the ongoing water crisis in Flint, Michigan. A growing number of bottled water donations are piling up at seven fire departments that have become regional collection points for this community-driven initiative led by the Buffalo Grove Police Department. The effort is aimed at helping Flint’s local police and firefighters, who are overwhelmed with assisting their own residents.

The fire departments in Arlington Heights, Grayslake, Round Lake, Schiller Park, Lake Zurich, North Riverside, and Utica are receiving the donations. Bottled water can be dropped off 24/7 until 6 p.m. on Friday at the Buffalo Grove Police Headquarters, located at 46 Raupp Blvd. According to firefighter Andrew Larson from the Arlington Heights Fire Department, they’ve already collected 100 cases of water and sent them to Buffalo Grove.

Buffalo Grove Deputy Police Chief Roy Bethge estimates that at least 2,000 cases of bottled water will be delivered to the department for transport to Flint. Initially, the plan was for off-duty officers to use a truck to deliver the supplies, but due to the overwhelming public response, officials are now hoping someone will volunteer a semi-truck to make the trip more efficient.

Grayslake Fire Chief John Christian noted that since the campaign started on Monday, there has been a constant flow of people bringing bottled water to the department’s downtown location.

Flint has been dealing with the water crisis since last year, when high levels of lead were found in its water supply. Now, communities across the country are stepping up to provide safe drinking water to the city.

In addition to the fire department efforts, the Lake County Housing Authority is also collecting bottled water and funds to purchase more for residents of the Flint Housing Commission. Donations of bottled water and checks will be accepted through Thursday, February 4. The housing authority is located at 33928 N. Route 45, just outside Grayslake. Donations will be taken from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Thursdays, Fridays, Mondays, and Tuesdays. Water and checks can be dropped off from 8 a.m. to noon on Wednesday, February 3, and from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Thursday, February 4.

All checks should be made out to the Lake County Housing Authority with "Flint Water" written in the memo line, as noted by Northern.

Thanks, Dan
