Excerpts from the DailyHerald.com:
Residents from surrounding suburbs are uniting to support those affected by the ongoing water crisis in Flint, Michigan. A growing number of bottled water donations are being collected at seven fire departments that have become regional drop-off points for the initiative led by the Buffalo Grove Police Department. The effort aims to assist Flint's police and firefighters, who are working tirelessly to help their community during this difficult time.
The fire departments in Arlington Heights, Grayslake, Round Lake, Schiller Park, Lake Zurich, North Riverside, and Utica are all accepting bottled water donations. Additionally, the Buffalo Grove Police Department is receiving contributions 24/7 until 6 p.m. on Friday, at 46 Raupp Blvd. According to firefighter Andrew Larson, the Arlington Heights Fire Department has already collected 100 cases of water and sent them to Buffalo Grove as part of the relief effort.
Buffalo Grove Deputy Police Chief Roy Bethge estimates that at least 2,000 cases of bottled water will be shipped to Flint. Initially, off-duty officers planned to transport the supplies using a regular truck, but due to the overwhelming response, officials are now seeking a volunteer with a semi-truck to make the delivery more efficient.
Grayslake Fire Chief John Christian said that since the campaign started on Monday, the department has been constantly receiving donations of bottled water at its downtown headquarters.
Flint has been dealing with the water crisis since last year when elevated lead levels were detected in its drinking supply. Now, people across the country are stepping up to provide safe drinking water to the city.
In addition to the local efforts, the Lake County Housing Authority is also collecting bottled water and funds to purchase more for residents of the Flint Housing Commission. The authority will accept donations of bottled water and checks until Thursday, February 4, at 33928 N. Route 45, just outside Grayslake. Donations can be made between 8 a.m. and 4 p.m. on Thursday, Friday, Monday, and Tuesday. On Wednesday, February 3, donations will be accepted from 8 a.m. to noon, and on Thursday, February 4, from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.
All checks should be made out to the Lake County Housing Authority with "Flint Water" noted in the memo line, according to Northern.
