The amended Water Pollution Prevention Law came into effect on June 1, 2008

The 32nd session of the Standing Committee of the 10th National People's Congress passed the revised Water Pollution Prevention Law on June 28. Xinhua News Agency officially broadcast the law on the same day, marking a significant step forward in China’s environmental governance. The updated Water Pollution Prevention Law is structured into eight chapters, covering general provisions, water pollution prevention and control standards and plans, supervision and management, preventive measures, protection of drinking water sources and other special water bodies, handling of water pollution incidents, legal responsibilities, and supplementary regulations. This legislation aims to prevent and control water pollution, protect and improve the environment, ensure the safety of drinking water, and promote sustainable and coordinated economic and social development. It emphasizes the importance of maintaining clean and safe water resources for public health and ecological balance. According to the law, "water pollution" refers to any changes in the physical, chemical, biological, or radiological characteristics of water bodies caused by the introduction of certain substances. These changes may impair the usability of water, pose risks to human health, damage ecosystems, or lead to a decline in water quality. The revised law will come into effect on June 1, 2008, and is expected to strengthen regulatory frameworks and enhance enforcement mechanisms to address water pollution more effectively across the country. This update reflects China's growing commitment to environmental protection and sustainable development.
