Huntsman recently revealed plans to construct a 400,000-ton-per-year MDI (diphenylmethane diisocyanate) facility at its site in Rozenburg, the Netherlands. The company has already begun conducting feasibility studies and initiating the design process for this new plant. This expansion is part of a broader strategy to enhance its global production capacity for MDI and related derivatives.
The project will leverage Huntsman’s proprietary technologies, including aniline, methylenediamine (MDA), and MDI, across three key production regions. Compared to traditional methods, the new technology aims to improve raw material efficiency and boost energy efficiency by up to 40%. This advancement not only supports sustainability goals but also strengthens the company’s competitive edge in the global market.
In addition, Huntsman had previously explored the possibility of building a second MDI unit in Shanghai, China, in collaboration with its parent company back in 2006. That proposed facility would have had a capacity of 240,000 tons per year. Although the plan is still under evaluation, it reflects the company’s long-term vision for expanding its presence in the Asia-Pacific region.
With these developments, Huntsman continues to invest in innovation and infrastructure to meet growing demand for high-performance materials in various industries, from construction to automotive and beyond.
