At yesterday's French Culture Year event, Reporter Zhou Yang had the opportunity to speak with Louis Swicz, the CEO of Renault Group. During the conversation, Swicz highlighted Renault’s ambitious plans for the Chinese market. He stated that the company intends to introduce a full range of vehicles, including mid- to high-end models, in China. In collaboration with Nissan, Renault currently ranks fourth globally, and while the company aims to enter the top three in China, no specific timeline has been set.
Swicz also mentioned that one of Renault’s models, which was recently launched in Europe for under 6,000 Euros, has been highly successful there. He expressed confidence that this model would be competitive in the Chinese market as well. The car, known as the Logan, was first introduced in Romania in September and is part of Renault’s strategy to target emerging markets, especially in Eastern Europe.
Renault’s return to the Chinese sedan market has not been straightforward. The initial project, Sanjiang Renault, did not succeed, and the company has since taken a more cautious approach. When asked about the location of the production base, Swicz confirmed that both Guangzhou and Wuhan are under consideration. However, he emphasized that the timing of the vehicle launch in China depends on the approval from the Chinese government. He estimated that the first batch of cars, including the Megane model, could be produced by 2006.
Regarding the models, some will be produced in France, while others will be tailored specifically for the Chinese market. When asked about competition with Peugeot Citroën, Swicz acknowledged that the rivalry exists, just like in other global markets. However, he remains confident that Renault’s market share will grow. He pointed out that a combination of quality, competitive pricing, and effective marketing—such as participating in Formula 1—will help secure a strong position in the Chinese automotive industry.
