As a diesel engine manufacturing company, why does Yuchai continue to move forward while others are taking a step back? “Technology innovation leads,†says Junping, Chairman of Yuchai Machinery Group Co., Ltd. “It is Yuchai’s competitive advantage and the key to its success in 2005. Technological innovation has always been the core driving force behind Yuchai’s development.†He shared these insights in an interview with the media, breaking the silence around the company’s success.
One Year, Multiple Domestic Breakthroughs
In 2005, Yuchai invested a total of 130 million yuan in technology development. Focusing on energy conservation and environmental protection, the company developed an independent innovation path that emphasized enhancing product technology and optimizing product structure. This allowed the entire product range to achieve technical leadership. With increased investment, the pace of technological progress and product innovation accelerated dramatically. In 2005, Yuchai launched the sixth product platform, including projects like the 4W Euro III and 4G horizontal engine design. Before the national emission regulations were implemented, nine series of products met the Euro III standard, and the 6A and 6L horizontal engines reached Euro IV standards. Additionally, Yuchai introduced small quantities of passenger car diesel engines under the 4W series, filling a gap in the domestic market and drawing widespread attention.
Moreover, the domestic diesel engine industry now has the only Euro III and Euro IV emission test benches, as well as the most advanced engine noise test benches, significantly improving the verification capabilities for independent technological innovation projects.
Global Talent Acquisition – Building Yuchai’s Future
“Gathering talents from around the world to build Yuchai†is the company’s global talent strategy. Yuchai actively recruits both domestic and international professionals, breaking geographical barriers. In 2005, the company hired 5 postdoctoral researchers, 13 master’s graduates, 614 top-tier university graduates, 5 senior managers, and 7 mid-level managers. Four positions were openly advertised and filled. Currently, Yuchai has 6 professors with state allowances, 16 PhD holders, 4 doctoral candidates, 260 postgraduates, and 60% of its staff are technical personnel. The talent structure follows a ratio of 1:3:15—PhD:Master:Undergraduate—ensuring a balanced team. Notable figures include Professor Zhuo Bin, a leading expert in China’s internal combustion engine industry, and Dr. Li Qin, an expert in diesel engine electronic control systems. These professionals form a strong R&D team that drives Yuchai’s innovation.
Last year, Yuchai leveraged its established technology platform to develop new products with advanced concepts, achieving breakthroughs in R&D and technology. The company completed the calibration of several engine series and successfully launched 23 new products. The Euro IV engine was introduced ahead of the national emission regulations. Today, Yuchai Laboratories has become the first “National Accredited Laboratory†in the engine industry, and the Yuchai Technology Center has been recognized as the first “National Enterprise Research and Development Center†by the Ministry of Science and Technology.
