The Schaumburg Fire Department was alerted to an automatic fire alarm before 6 a.m. on Saturday, followed by multiple 911 calls reporting smoke at 1234 Valley Lake Drive. Engine 54 arrived first and connected to the building’s standpipe system. Upon entry, firefighters discovered residents in the lobby and on upper-floor balconies of the seven-story structure. Once they reached the fire floor, they encountered heavy smoke and had to locate the exact unit that was on fire.
An 85-year-old resident from the affected apartment suffered second-degree burns to her chest and was taken to St. Alexius Medical Center in Hoffman Estates before being transferred to Loyola University Hospital’s burn center for further treatment. Two fire lines were deployed, allowing crews to contain the fire within the unit of origin. The incident escalated to a 2-11 alarm, with additional ambulances dispatched as a precaution. Firefighters rescued several residents who had taken refuge on their balconies to escape the smoke.
Larry Shapiro, a local photographer, captured several images from the scene. His photos show Engine 52 arriving at the front driveway alongside Ambulance 52, Battalion 5, and Truck 52. Another image shows firefighters bringing equipment into the building, while another highlights the fire unit located on the fourth floor of the west side of the building. Additional photos depict investigators examining the fire site after the overhaul and firefighters resting on the seventh-floor balcony following a secondary search.
Mutual aid companies included units from Arlington Heights, Elk Grove Village, Itasca, Mount Prospect, Palatine, Rolling Meadows, Palatine Rural, Buffalo Grove, Barrington, and Bloomingdale. Ambulances came from Hoffman Estates, Arlington Heights, Roselle, Bensenville, Wheeling, and Glenside. Chief officers from Arlington Heights, Palatine Rural, and Itasca also responded.
The Chicago Tribune reported that the woman, in critical condition, was later moved to Loyola for specialized care. Firefighters managed to prevent the fire from spreading to the fifth floor, though the fourth floor sustained significant damage, forcing 15 families to evacuate temporarily. The Red Cross is assisting with temporary housing.
