Of interest … Mack Bulldog history

Dan McInerney came across an interesting article about the history of the Mack Bulldog, and here are some highlights from trucks.com:

When it comes to iconic animal logos in automotive history, few can match the fame of the bulldog that has graced the front of Mack Trucks for nearly a century. The story begins with the RCA Victor company and its famous dog, Nipper—but the bulldog on Mack vehicles holds its own unique place in automotive legend.

The canine hood ornament, now over 95 years old, is a staple on almost every Mack truck model. Known as "Mack the Bulldog," this symbol has become one of the most recognizable in the industry. Originally owned by the United States, the brand is now under the Swedish company AB Volvo, but the bulldog remains a key part of its identity.

Mack Trucks was founded in 1900, and while the company has evolved over the years, the bulldog has remained a constant. Over time, variations of the design have appeared, including tiny helmets, construction gear, firefighter outfits, and even red capes—like a superhero.

The bulldog's popularity traces back to World War I, particularly with the Mack AC truck. Introduced in 1916, these vehicles were rugged and reliable, and their design reminded British soldiers of the English bulldog. They began calling the truck the "Bulldog Mack," and the nickname stuck.

However, the first official appearance of the bulldog wasn’t as a hood ornament—it was as an emblem on the side of the truck in 1921. At the time, Mack was very proud of its reputation, and the design showed a front-facing bulldog tearing up a book that read “hauling costs.”

It wasn’t until 1932 that the bulldog made its way to the front of the truck. Alfred F. Masury, then chief engineer at Mack, created the first carved bulldog figure. A medical condition had kept him from his usual work, so he turned to carving as a hobby. That same year, the figure appeared on the front of the Mack AB, a lighter version of the AC model.

Over the decades, the design of the bulldog has changed. In 1979, Mack simplified the figure by shortening the ears and tail to make it easier for drivers and mechanics who often found it catching on gloves or jewelry when tilting the hood.

Functionally, the bulldog also shifted. Initially used as a radiator cap ornament, it later became a handle for opening the hood on conventional models. On cab-over-engine trucks, it served as a handle for tasks like washing the windshield or checking coolant levels.

According to Doug Maney, curator of Mack’s historical museum, the bulldog continues to serve a practical purpose today. “On conventional models with tilt hoods, the Bulldog ornament became the handle for opening the hood to access the engine compartment,” he said. “On a cab-over engine model, it became the handle for stabilization during tasks like windshield washing or servicing items such as windshield wipers or radiator coolant.”

Even now, the tiny dog is still used as a handle on Mack’s latest models, proving that tradition and function can go hand in hand.
