Dan McInerney came across an article detailing the fascinating history of the Mack Bulldog, and here are some highlights from trucks.com:
The Mack Bulldog is one of the most recognizable logos in automotive history, with a legacy that stretches back nearly a century. While the RCA Victor dog, Nipper, may be more famous in some circles, the bulldog that graces every Mack truck is no less iconic.
Originally introduced as a hood ornament in 1921, the bulldog has since become a symbol of strength, reliability, and tradition. It’s now a standard feature on all Mack trucks, though its design has evolved over time—from a simple emblem to a three-dimensional sculpture, and even into a functional handle for opening hoods or stabilizing the cab.
The origin of the bulldog goes all the way back to World War I. In 1916, Mack Trucks supplied thousands of AC models to the U.S. and British governments. These trucks were rugged, durable, and tough—much like an English bulldog. Soldiers began calling them “Bulldog Mack,†and the nickname stuck. It wasn’t until 1921 that the first official bulldog emblem appeared on a Mack truck, this time on the side of the vehicle rather than as a hood ornament.
The actual mascot was born in 1932 when Alfred F. Masury, Mack’s chief engineer, carved a small bulldog out of wood during a period of medical leave. The design was later adapted for use as a hood ornament, and it quickly became a signature feature of the brand.
Over the decades, the bulldog has undergone several design changes. In 1979, Mack rounded off the ears and tail to make it safer for drivers and mechanics who often caught their gloves or jewelry on the sharp edges. As truck designs changed, so did the function of the bulldog—it transitioned from a radiator cap ornament to a practical handle for accessing engine compartments and maintaining vehicles.
Today, the bulldog remains a key feature on Mack trucks, serving both as a symbol of heritage and as a useful tool for maintenance. According to Doug Maney, curator of Mack’s historical museum, the bulldog still functions as a handle on many of the company’s modern models, whether it's used to open the hood or to stabilize the cab while cleaning or servicing parts.
Even after more than a century, the Mack Bulldog continues to capture the imagination of truck enthusiasts around the world. It’s not just a logo—it’s a piece of American industrial history, standing tall and proud on every Mack truck that rolls down the road.
