An article on ourgazette.com covered the follow-up to the sudden closure of American LaFrance Fire Apparatus in South Carolina:
A former employee who had once locked the gate at American LaFrance earlier this year found himself back inside the Patillo building on Wednesday—but not as an employee. Instead, he was among hundreds of people attending a public auction for the business personal assets of the dissolved company.
The plant shut down in January, leaving hundreds without jobs and creating a $650,000 debt to taxpayers from an economic development deal. Now, the county is trying to recover that loss by auctioning off the company’s remaining assets at its last location on Cypress Gardens Road.
According to County Supervisor Dan Davis, this is likely the first time a county has had to sell off a company's property after it essentially vanished, leaving behind unresolved financial obligations.
By 9 a.m. on Wednesday, more than 90 people had registered online, and over 70 had signed up for in-person bidding the day before. The event was drawing interest from local businesses looking to acquire used equipment at a discount.
Steve Potts, president of Scout Boats, made the trip from his Summerville facility to see what he could pick up. His top priority? Bridge cranes.
Robert Holseberg, owner of Rewined Candles in Charleston, was also in attendance, hoping to secure extra tools to support his growing business. He was especially interested in forklifts, tables, and cabinets.
Not all of the company’s inventory was up for sale—firetrucks still in various stages of assembly were not included. The county explained that the Patillo building owners have a claim on those items due to American LaFrance defaulting on its lease. A representative from the building said they are still trying to contact someone from the company to resolve the issue.
Thanks, Dan
