Barrington Countryside FPD buys demo engine

MySuburbanlife.com recently published an article about the Barrington Countryside Fire Protection District, highlighting a significant development in their operations: the purchase of a new fire engine. The story also featured a heartfelt tribute to retired deputy chief John Feit, who played a key role in guiding the district through its transition to independence.

The board of trustees approved the new engine purchase during a meeting on Monday evening, just after a surprise dedication ceremony honoring Feit for his years of service. Trustee Paul Heinze formally announced the renaming of the district’s headquarters conference room at 22222 N. Pepper Road in Lake Barrington to the "Deputy Chief John J. Feit Center." This gesture was a touching way to recognize Feit’s contributions as both a leader and a consultant to the district.

Feit has been actively involved in supporting the district since its separation from the village of Barrington. His work includes planning for a third fire station, advising on equipment purchases, and helping the board navigate the challenges of operating independently. As the district marks its 100-day anniversary of self-governance, it's clear that Feit's guidance has been invaluable.

According to Chief Jeff Swanson, the district’s 70 firefighter-paramedics responded to 124 emergencies in February alone, transporting 61 patients to local hospitals. With such a high volume of calls, having up-to-date and efficient equipment is more important than ever.

Feit recommended the purchase of a new rescue-pumper-squad engine for Station 2 in Barrington Hills. Currently on display as a demo at Fire Service, Inc., in Florida, the vehicle is expected to arrive in less than two months. This new apparatus will serve multiple purposes—acting as a frontline fire engine, water pumper, and fully equipped squad vehicle with advanced life support capabilities.

The new engine is also intended to address space issues at Station 2, where vehicles are currently parked bumper-to-bumper. By replacing three older units with this one versatile piece of equipment, the district aims to improve efficiency and response times. Feit emphasized that this single purchase will allow them to bring 10,000 gallons of water directly to the scene—something they haven’t been able to do before.

"We’ve never done this before," Feit said, reflecting on the significance of the investment. District President Tom Rowan expressed confidence in the decision, calling the $318,550 purchase a smart and necessary move for the future of the department.
