Barrington Countryside FPD buys demo engine

MySuburbanlife.com recently published an article detailing the Barrington Countryside Fire Protection District's recent developments, including the approval of a new fire engine. The story also highlighted a special moment of recognition for John Feit, a retired deputy chief and consultant with the Illinois Fire Chiefs Association.

The district’s trustees approved the purchase of a new engine during their meeting on Monday evening, just after celebrating a surprise dedication for Feit. Trustee Paul Heinze delivered a heartfelt speech, officially renaming the district headquarters conference room at 22222 N. Pepper Road in Lake Barrington as the "Deputy Chief John J. Feit Center," in honor of his long-standing service to the department.

Feit has been working closely with the district since its separation from the village of Barrington. He has been instrumental in planning the development of a third fire station and guiding the board through key decisions, such as the acquisition of new firefighting equipment.

With the district now celebrating its 100-day anniversary of independent operations, it has already made a significant impact. In February alone, the 70 firefighter-paramedics responded to 124 emergencies, transporting 61 patients to local hospitals, according to Chief Jeff Swanson.

As part of its ongoing efforts to improve response capabilities, Feit recommended that the district invest in a new rescue-pumper-squad engine for Station 2 in Barrington Hills. This unit, currently on display at Fire Service, Inc., in Florida, is expected to arrive in just over 40 days.

The new apparatus will serve multiple roles: acting as a frontline fire engine, water pumper, and a tool-equipped squad vehicle. It will also provide advanced life support for critical incidents. According to Feit and Station 2 Captain Nick Asta, this single purchase will replace three older vehicles that are currently causing space issues at the station.

“We’ve never done this before,” Feit said, reflecting on the significance of the investment. “This engine will allow us to bring 10,000 gallons of water to the scene on our own.”

District President Tom Rowan expressed confidence in the decision, calling the $318,550 purchase a smart and necessary investment for the future of the department. With the new engine, the Barrington Countryside Fire Protection District is taking a major step forward in enhancing its emergency response capabilities and ensuring the safety of the community it serves.
