In the future, passenger cars, commercial vehicles, and specialized machinery produced in Xiamen are expected to be more advanced, efficient, and secure across all aspects. According to a recent report, the city is set to invest 1 billion yuan in the construction of a "Vehicle and Engineering Machinery R&D Center" that will integrate product development, technology incubation, and training. This center, located in the Jimei Machinery Industry Concentration Zone, is expected to become the most advanced and largest facility of its kind in China.
The project recently underwent a review and appraisal at the Xiamen Hotel, where renowned academicians and industry experts gathered to discuss its development. The R&D center is planned to be completed within five years, with an estimated investment of up to 1 billion yuan. It will include 13 technical research centers, forming a public platform for technological innovation. In addition to the R&D infrastructure, the center aims to establish a comprehensive production and research hub, collaborating with universities such as Xiamen University, Jimei University, and Fuzhou University to train talent and conduct joint research.
Furthermore, the center plans to establish a non-profit international-level motor vehicle testing agency, offering essential testing services to local companies. Once operational, it will focus on passenger cars, commercial vehicles, and large-scale machinery, providing full-cycle services including vehicle assembly, design, safety inspections, and noise reduction technologies. It will also explore emerging fields like environmental protection, energy efficiency, and artificial intelligence to develop next-generation products.
The project will be implemented in two phases. The first phase, starting in 2008 and completing in 2010, will require an investment of 600 million yuan, aiming to create a national-level R&D center focused on passenger and commercial vehicle development, as well as construction machinery. The second phase, from 2011 to 2012, will see an additional 400 million yuan invested, with the goal of establishing an internationally recognized R&D center and the world's largest bus R&D and manufacturing base in Xiamen.
Experts have emphasized the strategic importance of this initiative. Academician Guo Konghui, Director of the State Key Laboratory of Automotive Dynamic Simulation, praised the government’s forward-thinking approach. He noted that while Xiamen’s automotive industry has grown rapidly, the country still lacks core technologies compared to foreign competitors. With rising labor costs, technological advancement becomes crucial for long-term competitiveness. The establishment of this R&D center, he said, is a vital step toward securing a stronger position in the global market and driving the future of the automotive and engineering machinery sectors.
