Xiamen will invest RMB 1 billion to build "R&D center for vehicles and construction machinery"

In the future, passenger cars, commercial vehicles, and specialized machinery produced in Xiamen are expected to be more advanced, reliable, and secure across all aspects. According to a recent report, Xiamen is set to invest 1 billion yuan to establish a "Vehicle and Engineering Machinery R&D Center" that will integrate product development, technology incubation, and training. Located in the Jimei Machinery Industry Concentration Zone, this center aims to become the most advanced and largest facility of its kind in China. The project, which recently underwent a review and appraisal at the Xiamen Hotel, has drawn participation from renowned academicians and industry experts nationwide. The R&D center is scheduled for completion within five years, with a total investment estimated at 1 billion yuan. It will include 13 technical research centers focused on public technology development. In addition to the R&D platform, the center plans to build an integrated production and R&D system, collaborating with universities such as Xiamen University, Jimei University, and Fuzhou University to foster talent through shared laboratories and joint research initiatives. Furthermore, the center intends to establish a non-profit, internationally recognized vehicle testing agency, offering essential services to local companies. Once completed, it will provide comprehensive solutions, including vehicle assembly, design, safety inspections, and noise reduction technologies. The center will also focus on emerging fields like environmental protection, energy efficiency, and artificial intelligence, aiming to develop cutting-edge products that shape the future of the industry. The project will be implemented in two phases. The first phase, starting in 2008 and concluding in 2010, will require an investment of 600 million yuan, with the goal of establishing a national-level R&D hub for passenger and commercial vehicles, as well as construction machinery. The second phase, launching in 2011 and finishing in 2012, will see an additional 400 million yuan invested, aiming to create an international-standard R&D center and the world’s largest bus R&D and production base in Xiamen. Experts have emphasized the strategic importance of the R&D center. Guo Konghui, an academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering and director of the State Key Laboratory of Automotive Dynamic Simulation, praised the initiative, noting that the city government has made a forward-thinking investment. He highlighted that while Xiamen's automotive industry is progressing well, the country still lacks core technological capabilities compared to global competitors. Without continuous innovation, China may struggle to maintain its competitive edge as labor costs rise. Therefore, building this R&D center is crucial for long-term growth and technological leadership in the automotive and machinery sectors.
