Trench rescue in Buffalo Grove, 12-12-22

Late Monday afternoon, emergency responders from Buffalo Grove Fire Department and local police were dispatched to 1011 Aspen Drive following a report of a worker trapped in a hole in the front yard. The incident occurred while workers were attempting to repair a residential sewer line at the property. One worker had been in the excavation site when the ground suddenly collapsed. Upon arrival, firefighters found frantic colleagues of the trapped worker desperately trying to dig him out. Given the severity of the situation, the entire MABAS Division 1 Technical Rescue Team was activated. Responders from Buffalo Grove, Long Grove, and Lincolnshire-Riverwoods immediately began coordinating efforts to free the trapped man. Early reports suggested he was unresponsive and not breathing. Additional technical rescue specialists quickly mobilized from neighboring towns including Palatine, Mount Prospect, Des Plaines, Rolling Meadows, Wheeling, Schaumburg, Elk Grove Village, Inverness, and Bartlett. A specialized communication vehicle from Buffalo Grove also joined the operation. An urgent request was made for a sewer vac unit from Arlington Heights Public Works, though the rescue was successfully completed before it arrived. The victim tragically did not survive the ordeal. He was transported away from the scene by an ambulance from Mundelein. Attached are several images taken by Larry Shapiro. These photos capture moments from the intense rescue effort, showcasing the collaborative work between multiple agencies to try and save the trapped worker. While the outcome was heartbreaking, it reflects the dedication of first responders working under extreme pressure. [Note: The gallery below contains additional photos from the scene.
