Rolling Meadows continues to consider plans for fire stations

The Daily Herald recently published an article focusing on the ongoing discussions in Rolling Meadows regarding the potential relocation of the downtown fire station. It seems that the future of this critical facility is at a crossroads, with city leaders expected to make a significant decision in April.

At a recent meeting, Rolling Meadows' leadership committed to determining whether they should relocate the downtown fire station or invest in repairing or rebuilding the existing one. This commitment came after Fire Chief Scott Franzgrote presented a proposal suggesting the relocation of the downtown station to New Wilke Road near Central Road. Additionally, he recommended moving the city's other station to Hicks Road between Euclid Avenue and Kirchoff Road. According to Chief Franzgrote, this strategic shift would optimize response times across the entire city.

While the proposed site on New Wilke Road presents some political challenges due to its proximity to neighboring towns, it remains the only viable north-south thoroughfare east of Route 53 that connects Euclid to Golf Road. Statistical data indicates that 85% of the fire department's calls originate east of Route 53 or very close to it. The locations of neighboring fire stations in Arlington Heights and Palatine, along with mutual aid agreements with these communities, factored heavily into Chief Franzgrote's recommendation.

Currently, the fire station located at 3111 Meadows Drive in the downtown area is half a century old and has been described by aldermen as an "embarrassment" to the city. In contrast, the other station on Plum Grove Road, situated west of Route 53, is slightly younger at 33 years but still shows signs of wear and tear. Over the years, city officials have debated the best course of action concerning their fire stations, particularly when it comes to addressing aging infrastructure.

In the past, Rolling Meadows secured a grant aimed at funding a third fire station. However, during challenging economic times, the city council concluded that the costs associated with constructing and staffing the new station were simply too high. As a result, Aldermen tasked Chief Franzgrote with devising recommendations that focused solely on the two existing stations without adding any additional personnel. He ultimately presented five potential scenarios for station locations, which can be viewed on the city’s official website at ci.rolling-meadows.il.us.
