China Holds New Metallurgical Smelting Technology to Break Foreign Monopoly of Zinc Concentrate Pressurization Technology

For over two and a half decades, the pressurized hydrometallurgical technology for processing zinc sulfide concentrate was dominated by a Canadian company known as Hudson Bay. However, this monopoly has now been broken. The Science and Technology Department of Yunnan Province recently announced that Yunnan Metallurgical Group Corporation has successfully developed its own advanced smelting technology in this field, achieving independent intellectual property rights. Wang Jikun, the project manager and deputy chief engineer at Yunnan Metallurgical Group, explained that the company has developed its own oxygen pressure leaching technology. This process allows for the direct leaching of zinc sulfide concentrate, followed by purification and electrowinning to produce high-quality zinc ingots. Additionally, other valuable metals present in the ore are effectively recycled. Sulfur is recovered in the form of elemental sulfur, which eliminates the need to rely on the sulfuric acid market. This new technology significantly streamlines the production process, moving away from traditional wet zinc smelting methods that involve roasting, flue gas cooling, and acid production. As a result, the investment required is reduced by approximately 30%. In terms of performance, the total zinc recovery rate has increased from 89% to 94.25%, while the zinc leaching rate stands at 98.06% and the iron leaching rate at 29.22%. According to Wang Jikun, an international online search query report from the Yunnan Provincial Institute of Scientific and Technical Information indicates that the technical and economic indicators of the industrial leaching process using pressure leaching are comparable to those of foreign technologies. Yunnan is a key non-ferrous metal production base in China, with zinc resources ranking first in the country, accounting for about 23%. Among these, high-speed rail zinc resources make up roughly one-third of Yunnan's total zinc reserves—approximately seven million tons—with an estimated economic value exceeding 60 billion yuan. The technology has already been piloted for industrial application in Yunnan. As it becomes more widely adopted, it is expected to bring substantial economic benefits to the province, boosting both efficiency and profitability in the zinc industry.
