After the Prodigal Behavior, the Big Trouble———Snowmelter Calcium Oxide Procurement Bidding Event

The South Korean government recently issued a tender for 45,000 tons of snow-melting calcium chloride, offering it to Chinese companies at a bid price of $150 per ton. However, the six largest calcium chloride producers in China and the China Calcium Chloride Industry Association negotiated a deal at $125 per ton. Despite this, a private Chinese company managed to secure the contract directly with the Korean side at just $100 per ton, CIF. This unauthorized deal led to losses amounting to tens of millions of yuan. When the incident was exposed by the media, public anger was inevitable. As I read about this news, I couldn’t help but feel furious at the clear violation committed by the company. However, what truly confused me was that after the incident came to light, the company in question—those who broke the rules and ignored national interests—was not punished in any way. This outcome left me deeply puzzled. My main concern is that such behavior undermines the integrity of the industry and harms the country’s collective interests. On the surface, it seems like a simple case of unfair competition, but in today’s complex global environment, the consequences can be far more serious. Imagine if a foreign buyer, having obtained cheap calcium chloride from China, later accuses China of dumping and claims that China isn’t a "market economy" country. This could trigger trade disputes and damage China's international reputation, causing much greater harm than just the loss of a single contract. In my view, we must not turn a blind eye to such violations. At the same time, the government should act quickly to establish stronger regulations and legal frameworks to prevent such incidents from happening again. It’s crucial to ensure that the system protects both business interests and national dignity. Without proper oversight, such actions could become more frequent, leading to long-term negative impacts on China’s economic standing.
