China Holds New Metallurgical Smelting Technology to Break Foreign Monopoly of Zinc Concentrate Pressurization Technology

For over two and a half decades, the pressurized hydrometallurgical technology for processing zinc sulfide concentrate has been dominated by a Canadian firm, Hudson Bay. However, this monopoly has now been broken. The Science and Technology Department of Yunnan Province recently announced that Yunnan Metallurgical Group Corporation has successfully developed its own advanced smelting technology in this field, achieving independent intellectual property rights. Wang Jikun, the project manager and deputy chief engineer at Yunnan Metallurgical Group, explained that the technology involves oxygen pressure leaching, directly extracting zinc from sulfide concentrates, followed by purification and electrowinning to produce high-quality zinc ingots. Additionally, other valuable metals in the ore are efficiently recycled. Sulfur is recovered as elemental sulfur, eliminating the need for sulfuric acid and reducing dependency on the acid market. This new process eliminates traditional steps such as roasting, flue gas cooling, and acid production, significantly streamlining operations and cutting investment costs by approximately 30%. Compared to conventional hydrometallurgical methods, which have a zinc leaching rate of 98.06% and an iron leaching rate of 29.22%, the new method boosts the overall zinc recovery rate from 89% to 94.25%. According to Wang Jikun, a technical and economic analysis conducted by the Yunnan Provincial Institute of Scientific and Technical Information shows that the performance of this pressure leaching technology is comparable to international standards. Yunnan, known as a major non-ferrous metal production base in China, holds the top position in zinc resources nationwide, accounting for about 23% of the country's total. Among these, high-speed rail zinc resources alone make up roughly one-third of Yunnan’s zinc reserves—approximately seven million tons—with an estimated economic value exceeding 60 billion yuan. This breakthrough technology has already entered the pilot stage for industrial application in Yunnan. As it is scaled up, it is expected to bring substantial economic benefits to the province, further strengthening its position in the global zinc industry.
