Arrest made for starting Cicero warehouse fire

This report comes from MyFoxChicago.com:

A 16-year-old boy has been charged with starting a massive fire that destroyed a vacant warehouse in Cicero earlier this week. The incident, which led to a five-alarm response, began when the teen and a group of friends allegedly went to the building at 1829 54th Ave. on Tuesday night.

According to town spokesman Ray Hanania, the teens reportedly started the fire, possibly to stay warm. However, the teenager allegedly played with the flames, causing them to spread rapidly. The group then fled the scene before emergency crews arrived.

The fire was first reported around 6:15 p.m., and it quickly spread to a nearby building at 1843 54th Ave., which houses Central Steel Fabricators. Firefighters worked through the night, battling the blaze for over 12 hours before finally bringing it under control early Wednesday morning.

Later that same night, just after 3:30 a.m., another fire broke out at a home on 1410 S. 50th Ct., and it quickly spread to the adjacent house at 1412 S. 50th St. However, investigators later determined that this second fire was caused by a space heater and was ruled an accident.

The Cicero Fire Department received critical information leading to the arrest of the suspect on Friday night. According to Hanania, no other juveniles involved in the initial fire will face charges.

From NBC5:

Authorities have confirmed that a teenage boy has been charged in connection with a five-alarm fire that destroyed a vacant warehouse and a neighboring business in west suburban Cicero. The incident occurred earlier this week and sparked a large-scale emergency response.

The juvenile suspect was arrested on Friday night after receiving information from the Cicero Fire Department, which passed the details on to local police. The boy was reportedly with two or more high school-aged friends who had gone to the warehouse on Tuesday evening, where they allegedly started a fire—possibly to stay warm.

According to reports, the suspect reportedly played with the fire, which caused it to spread uncontrollably. At that point, the group ran away. The fire soon engulfed the entire warehouse and spread to a nearby building housing Central Steel Fabricators, which contains flammable materials like cardboard and aerosol cans.

Firefighters battled the blaze for over 12 hours, and several area fire departments were called in to assist. Despite the intensity of the fire, no injuries were reported. Both the warehouse and the neighboring business were completely destroyed.

Fire Chief Ron Opalecky expressed relief that the suspect had been identified and arrested. “We’re very pleased that this fire has been resolved and a suspect has been identified,” he said.

Cicero Town President Larry Dominick praised the efforts of firefighters and police officials, calling their work essential in protecting the community. “These are terrible tragedies and many lives have been disrupted,” he said. “I’m proud of the hard work that our employees and Fire and Police officials put into protecting our community and responding to emergencies.”

Police Superintendent Bernard Harrison confirmed that no other charges will be filed in connection with the warehouse fire.
