Off the beaten path … Super Bowl

Dennis McGuire, Jr. here, and I just came across this interesting tidbit from NorthJersey.com. While it’s not specifically about the Chicago area, it caught my attention due to how unique the setup is. The upcoming Super Bowl XLVIII is set to be a remarkable event for several reasons, particularly when it comes to public safety. Given the Meadowlands' distinct geographical layout, the security operations will involve multiple federal, state, county, and municipal agencies. One particularly noteworthy aspect is that this might be the first time a Super Bowl relies heavily on a volunteer fire department. Additionally, there's another lesser-known group involved—the Meadowlands Fire Department. Most of the municipalities around East Rutherford, including the borough itself, depend on volunteer departments. This presents an unusual scenario for a major sporting event typically held in large metropolitan areas with centralized, professional public safety teams. However, the entirety of the Meadowlands complex, including MetLife Stadium, the Izod Center, the racetrack, and the Quest Center, falls under the jurisdiction of the Meadowlands Fire Department. Originally named the New Jersey Sports Exhibition Authority Fire Department when it was established in 1975—just a year before the first venue opened—it now operates as a state-funded entity with 22 members and a station located on Route 120 in East Rutherford. They handle all events within the complex. Captain Kevin Meehan outlined the department’s area of responsibility, which extends to roadways leading to the complex, parts of Route 120, Barry’s Creek Road, and Route 3 between the stadium and arena. It also includes the flyover bridge from Route 3 over the New Jersey Turnpike into the complex. To manage the diverse range of emergencies, the department has equipped itself with modern vehicles like a 2009 quint aerial ladder, a 2014 Ford F-450 mini-pumper, a 2004 F-550 mini-pumper, and even a compact vehicle designed for rapid response. “This small vehicle is essentially a glorified golf cart,” Meehan explained. “It carries only 100 pounds of water and 10 gallons of foam, but its agility allows us to reach the stadium access points quickly in case of a fire.” To ensure comprehensive coverage, a network of mutual aid agreements has been established among local towns. On the day of the game, East Rutherford’s fire department will serve as the primary standby team. Carlstadt will also be prepared to assist, along with other nearby departments such as Wood-Ridge, which can provide support if needed. Lyndhurst Assistant Fire Chief Paul Haggerty highlighted the importance of the region's preparedness. “Our department will handle rescue services for highway accidents and transit incidents,” he stated. “Additionally, since we expect an influx of visitors, our headquarters will remain operational from noon until midnight.” Two Lyndhurst fire units will be dedicated to Super Bowl operations, ensuring full activation of their department. Locations like hotels and commercial buildings in the township will experience heightened activity during the event. Haggerty emphasized the readiness of neighboring departments. “If commanding agencies require any resources, they just need to call. Strategic units will already be stationed at various firehouses following a joint plan developed over nearly a year.” East Rutherford’s police officers and fire officials even visited the last two Super Bowls to learn from those cities’ strategies. Haggerty praised East Rutherford for its exceptional organization of the various Meadowlands departments and their innovative approach to planning.

Rear Bumper

Car rear bumper
The rear bumper is an important part installed at the rear of the car. It mainly protects the rear structure of the vehicle, decorates the body, and absorbs energy and reduces damage during collisions. It is usually made of plastic, metal or composite materials, coordinated with the overall shape of the car body, adding beauty to the vehicle while providing safety protection.

Collision buffer:
When a vehicle is hit from behind, the rear bumper is the first line of defense, absorbing and dispersing the impact energy, reducing damage to the vehicle structure and passengers. Through its own deformation and internal buffer structure, it effectively reduces the impact of the collision and protects key vehicle components such as the trunk, taillights, and rear suspension.

Design:
The shape of the rear bumper is usually coordinated with the style of the whole vehicle, adding a unique visual effect to the rear of the car. Its lines and shapes can be smoothly integrated with the body of the car, enhancing the overall aesthetics of the vehicle. The rear bumper designs of different models have their own characteristics, some are simple and generous, and some are sporty and fashionable, meeting the different aesthetic needs of consumers.

Trailer hook installation:
Some models have a trailer hook installation hole on the rear bumper, which is convenient for installing a trailer hook when needed to realize the vehicle's towing function. This is very practical for users who need to tow large items such as RVs and yachts.
