A new addition to the MABAS Division 12 family has made its way onto our website. The Oak Brook Terrace Fire District serves a 2.5-square-mile area from a single station, employing both full-time and part-time staff. Their station is home to a variety of firefighting vehicles, including two engines, a tower ladder, two ambulances, a TRT trailer, and even a pickup. Recently, they’ve added a brand-new Spartan/Marion engine to their fleet, marking a shift from their previous white-over-red color scheme to all-black rigs. The other engine and tower ladder are both E-ONE models, while the ambulances were manufactured by Medtec.
Chicago has long been recognized as the birthplace of the Snorkel in the fire service, and the greater Chicago area became synonymous with these iconic vehicles. Every conceivable boom length was available, often mounted on custom-built chassis from various manufacturers. Before acquiring their current E-ONE 95-foot tower ladder in 1991, this department operated an unusual 85-foot Snorkel on a conventional GMC 7000 chassis. This was one of the few Snorkels in the region not built on a Ford C-Series chassis, an International cab-over, or a custom fire truck frame.
Their headquarters station is a sight to behold, as captured in a recent photo by Larry Shapiro. The building itself stands as a testament to their commitment to service, nestled within the community they protect. Inside, you’ll find a state-of-the-art facility equipped with cutting-edge technology and resources. The department’s engines are no exception—take, for instance, their E-ONE engine, which boasts advanced features designed for maximum efficiency and safety.
Looking back at history, the Oak Brook Terrace Fire District once relied on a 1964 Pitman Snorkel, affectionately known as Snorkel 86. Built on a GMC 7000 chassis with a V-12 engine, this vehicle featured a 1,000-gallon-per-minute pump and carried 200 gallons of water. It served the community well before being replaced by more modern equipment. This relic of firefighting past now resides in the department's archives, a reminder of how far they've come.
