Just after 9 PM, Long Grove Fire Protection District received a call about a house fire at 4251 Route 83. Upon arrival, crews confirmed it as an active fire. Mutual aid quickly rolled in, with engines dispatched from Lincolnshire-Riverwoods, Palatine, Lake Zurich, and Arlington Heights. Buffalo Grove sent their 75-foot quint, while Prospect Heights provided an ambulance and tanker. Due to the lack of hydrants in the area, Palatine Rural FPD also sent a supplementary tanker.
The house, one of the few along Route 83 between Aptakisic and Hill Top Roads, had conditions resembling those of a hoarder’s residence, complicating interior firefighting efforts. The fire had primarily spread across the exterior of the building, affecting both floors. Fortunately, there were no reports of injuries. As the situation escalated to a Code 4 (working fire), additional resources were called in, including an engine from Barrington and an Arlington Heights ambulance.
I managed to capture some moments from the scene. Long Grove Squad 55 was actively supplying two hand lines to combat the flames. Crews from Lake Zurich were seen venting the second-floor structure to control the fire's progression. Meanwhile, Long Grove firefighters worked tirelessly to douse the hotspots with water. In the absence of hydrants, Squad 55 relied on Tanker 55 for its water supply. A second-floor window was broken out to release trapped heat and smoke, while a probationary firefighter, under the supervision of a Palatine lieutenant, skillfully cut into the roof to ventilate the building.
Lincolnshire Riverwoods Engine 51 illuminated the scene with its powerful lights, providing much-needed visibility for the firefighters. The dedication of these first responders was evident as they worked diligently to contain the blaze. Even with the challenges posed by the hoarding conditions and limited water access, the coordinated efforts of multiple departments ensured a safe outcome.
