After receiving reports of a house fire just after 9 PM at 4251 Route 83, Long Grove FPD units quickly arrived on the scene and confirmed it as an active fire. Mutual aid support was swiftly coordinated, with engines dispatched from nearby departments including Lincolnshire-Riverwoods, Palatine, Lake Zurich, and Arlington Heights. Buffalo Grove sent a 75′ quint, while Prospect Heights contributed an ambulance and tanker. Due to the lack of hydrants in the area, an additional tanker was called in from the Palatine Rural FPD.
Upon arrival, firefighters discovered the house—a rare structure along Route 83 between Aptakisic and Hill Top Roads—to be cluttered with items characteristic of hoarding, complicating efforts to navigate the interior. The fire had primarily spread across the exterior of the building and had extended to both floors. Fortunately, there were no reports of injuries. As the alarm escalated to a Code 4 (working fire), reinforcements were requested, including an engine from Barrington and an Arlington Heights ambulance.
In the midst of the operation, Long Grove Squad 55 was seen supplying two hand lines to combat the flames. Lake Zurich firefighters worked to ventilate the second floor, while other teams focused on cooling down hotspots with water jets. Lincolnshire-Riverwoods Engine 51 illuminated the scene with its powerful lights, providing critical visibility for responders. Despite the absence of hydrants, Long Grove’s Squad 55 was effectively supplied by Tanker 55. Probationary firefighters under the supervision of a Palatine lieutenant were tasked with venting the roof, ensuring proper airflow and preventing further damage.
A second-floor window was strategically removed to allow smoke to escape, aiding in clearing the structure. Images captured by photographer Larry Shapiro reveal the intense yet methodical work of the firefighters, who worked tirelessly to contain the blaze. Squad 55 was positioned prominently in front of the burning house, showcasing the strategic placement of equipment to maximize efficiency.
As the firefighting efforts continued, additional resources were mobilized to ensure the fire was fully extinguished. The collaborative efforts of multiple departments highlight the importance of mutual aid agreements in managing large-scale emergencies. More photos from the incident can be found in a dedicated gallery provided by Larry Shapiro.
This incident serves as a reminder of the challenges faced by first responders, particularly in areas lacking essential infrastructure like hydrants. It also underscores the dedication and coordination required to manage such incidents safely and effectively.
