Illinois Task Force 1 deployed after Hurricane Florence

From excerpts on DailyHerald.com: September 14 marked the day Hurricane Florence made landfall in North Carolina, prompting a federal disaster declaration for the state. The storm lingered for days, leaving hundreds of thousands without power and many towns inundated. In response, emergency personnel from across the U.S. were dispatched to assist. Among those aiding in the relief efforts were members of Illinois Task Force 1, a team of 15 firefighters from a statewide disaster response program. Ten of these firefighters hailed from suburban departments such as Wauconda, Wheeling, Arlington Heights, Downers Grove, Morton Grove, Alsip, Matteson, Naperville, and Rolling Meadows. Additionally, firefighters from Chicago and Bettendorf, Iowa, joined the effort. Departing from MABAS headquarters in Wheeling on September 14, the team traveled in a convoy equipped with boats, generators, and essential gear. Arriving in Raleigh the following afternoon, they were quickly redeployed to Whiteville before moving to Riegelwood, a coastal community near the swollen Cape Fear River. Upon their arrival on September 16, they found the local fire station overwhelmed with displaced residents, including some of the firefighters' own families. A National Guard unit and other responders were already stationed there. The Illinois team immediately sprang into action, rescuing stranded individuals and relocating them to safety via the National Guard. They also provided critical supplies like water, food, and medical assistance while helping cover damaged rooftops with tarps. Their operations often involved navigating through waist-deep waters using a military surplus truck fitted with an inflatable motorized boat. When conditions worsened, they transitioned to the boat for deeper areas. Local firefighters familiar with the terrain accompanied them, guiding them through hazardous zones and identifying those most in need. Days stretched into long hours, with many working 15-hour shifts and responding to emergencies around the clock. One unforgettable incident involved rescuing an elderly couple trapped in a submerged vehicle. Firefighters managed to break a window and extract the woman just in time. After nearly two weeks of relentless work, the Illinois task force finally returned home on September 26. Their efforts played a crucial role in alleviating suffering and restoring hope amidst one of the worst natural disasters in recent memory.
