Glenview to build new FD headquarters (more)

The Chicago Tribune recently published an article about the latest developments in the construction of the new Glenview Fire Department headquarters, set to be located near the village hall campus. The project is taking shape on the site where the former police station once stood, at 1215 Waukegan Road. The old fire station at 1815 Glenview Road had to relocate due to its inclusion in a planned four-story development between Pine and Church streets. Initially, there were discussions about renovating the abandoned police station, which has been empty for around six or seven years. However, after a thorough evaluation of the costs associated with updating the building, it was decided to demolish the structure and build a completely new facility. According to Village Manager Todd Hileman, the financial difference between restoring the old building and constructing a new one was negligible. The project, estimated to cost approximately $5.5 million, is expected to be completed by August, when the village trustees will finalize their decisions. As of now, bids are being solicited for the demolition and groundwork, with the former police station slated for demolition in September. During a village meeting held on July 16, trustees instructed the architects to consider expanding the station to accommodate three fire trucks. There were also deliberations regarding the size and material of the roof, which could impact the overall cost. Trustee Michael Jenny expressed support for enlarging the station, advocating for an increase in the number of bunk beds from six to nine. Most trustees concurred, preferring a shingled roof over a more expensive, yet durable, metal one. Fire Chief Wayne Globerger suggested further expansion to include space for the battalion chief's vehicle in a half bay. This would allow easier access during inclement weather, such as winter, when the battalion chief needs to respond promptly to incidents across town. Despite this suggestion, Globerger acknowledged that the department could adapt to any configuration provided. For visual reference, here are some images of the progress and design concepts. While the exact URLs for the images are pending, they depict both the current state of the construction site and conceptual renderings of the future facility. Previously, we shared updates about the relocation process and the temporary arrangements made during the transition. For those interested in detailed blueprints and comprehensive documentation, the full packet containing all relevant drawings can be accessed via the link: GlenviewSta6. As the community eagerly awaits the completion of this vital infrastructure project, these updates reflect the careful planning and consideration going into creating a modern and functional fire department headquarters that meets the needs of Glenview residents.
