Fire service loses a good friend, Greg Melyon

I just learned about the passing of my dear friend Greg Melyon. It's hard to believe that Greg is no longer with us. He left this world far too soon. Greg was such a vibrant and kind person, and it feels surreal that he's gone. Greg was born on March 20, 1962, to Henry and Alice (Simala) Melyon, and he spent his entire life in the Calumet Region. He graduated from Bishop Noll Institute in 1980 and remained deeply connected to his community throughout his life. Greg had an incredible career as a firefighter, starting with the Gary, Indiana Fire Department. He was part of Squad 2, one of the busiest heavy rescue squads in the country, and rose through the ranks to eventually become Chief of Operations after 27 years of service. His dedication and expertise were unmatched. After retiring from the fire department, Greg transitioned into training at the BP Whiting Refinery, where he continued sharing his invaluable knowledge about safety and emergency response. Beyond his professional achievements, Greg was a passionate collector of fire apparatus memorabilia and loved traveling to explore new places and cuisines. His love for photography and firefighting history was evident in his extensive collection of fire apparatus pictures and die-cast models. Greg is survived by his loving wife of 29 years, Donna (nee Klapak), his brother Dan (Ellen) Melyon, and Mark (Gerardette) Melyon, along with numerous nieces and nephews. He also leaves behind cherished friends like Guinness Melyon, who meant so much to him. The funeral services will be private, and there will be no public viewing. If you'd like to honor Greg's memory, consider making a donation to the Fire Museum of Greater Chicago. It's heartwarming to know that Greg's passion for firefighting and community will continue to live on through this organization. Greg touched so many lives with his generosity, humor, and unwavering commitment to helping others. He will be deeply missed by everyone who knew him. Rest in peace, Greg. You will always be remembered.
