Late last Friday evening, two young boys found themselves in trouble while paddling on Bangs Lake in Wauconda. They had been playing nearby when they spotted some paddle boats and impulsively decided to venture out onto the water. According to authorities, the boys quickly became frightened by the strong winds and turbulent water conditions. In their panic, they abandoned the boats and attempted to swim back to shore.
Their distress calls caught the attention of nearby anglers, who immediately sprang into action. One of the boys, an 11-year-old, was quickly pulled from the water and brought to safety. However, rescuers struggled to locate the second boy, 9-year-old Geraldo Rodriguez, despite initial efforts by firefighters and divers.
As the night wore on, the situation evolved from a rescue mission to a recovery operation. The Wauconda Fire District urgently requested additional support from neighboring departments, including teams with specialized sonar equipment. The intensive search continued throughout the night, finally coming to a somber conclusion early Saturday afternoon.
Around noon, the sonar team located the boy's body near the deepest section of the lake, which reaches approximately 30 feet in depth. The water temperature at the time was a chilling 45 degrees Fahrenheit, and the surviving child was treated for hypothermia.
The response involved a significant collaborative effort, with assistance provided by crews from Lake Zurich, Barrington, Long Grove, Round Lake, Fox Lake, Countryside, Grayslake, McHenry Township, Crystal Lake, Buffalo Grove, Lake Forest, Libertyville, Mundelein, Cary, Nunda Rural, Gurnee, Newport, Huntley, Fox River Grove, Richmond, and Wonder Lake.
