This innovative solution is ideal for applications such as white LED backlighting and camera flash in systems powered by polymer lithium-ion batteries.
The AAT2803 offers advanced control capabilities, allowing individual management of three distinct LED groups — two for backlighting and one for camera flash — with a total of seven channels. It is especially beneficial for handheld devices with dual displays, offering improved power efficiency and reduced component count. Additionally, the device includes a light-load mode that minimizes power consumption when the display is in standby, making it an energy-efficient choice for modern mobile systems.

He explained that the AAT2803's ability to independently control backlight LEDs while operating in light-load mode helps designers reduce both power usage and physical footprint, offering a more streamlined design approach.
In terms of performance, the AAT2803 can drive up to six LEDs at 180mA, with the flexibility to control two sets of four and two LEDs separately for primary and secondary displays. Its AS2Cwire™ digital interface enables precise control, allowing users to adjust brightness across 16 logarithmic levels. The device also features four low-current settings, enabling operation as low as 50µA in light-load conditions.
The charge pump supports multiple operating modes — 1X, 1.5X, and 2X — automatically selecting the most efficient configuration based on the forward voltage and input voltage of each LED. This optimization extends the time spent in 1X mode, maximizing power efficiency. Unlike many integrated solutions, the AAT2803 uses a dedicated charge pump for backlighting, ensuring that the camera flash function remains unaffected due to its separate power source.
For flash applications, the AAT2803 provides a regulated output with continuous current up to 120mA and pulse current up to 300mA. A dedicated start pin enhances system flexibility, while built-in thermal protection ensures safe operation under overload conditions. Its smooth start-up circuit prevents current surges, and the 1MHz switching frequency allows the use of ultra-small ceramic capacitors, further reducing board space requirements.
The AAT2803 is available in a lead-free, thermally enhanced 24-pin QFN44 package, suitable for temperatures ranging from -40°C to +80°C. Each unit is priced at $1.97 for orders of 1,000 units.
