AnalogicTech introduces a six-channel backlight charge pump

Advanced Analogic Technologies Inc. (Nasdaq: AATI), a leading provider of power management semiconductors for mobile consumer electronics, has recently launched the AAT2803 — a high-efficiency dual charge pump designed to enhance performance in portable devices. This versatile chip is ideal for white LED backlighting and camera flash applications, particularly in systems powered by polymer lithium-ion batteries. The AAT2803 offers precise control over three independent LED groups, with two dedicated to backlighting and one for camera flash. It features seven channels in total, six for backlighting and one for flash, enabling flexible and efficient power distribution. The device is especially beneficial for handheld devices with dual displays, as it reduces power consumption and saves space by incorporating a light-load mode that minimizes energy use when the display is in standby. KinShum, Director of Strategic Marketing at AnalogicTech, emphasized the growing trend of dual-display designs in modern handhelds, such as clamshell and upright models. He noted that the AAT2803’s ability to independently control two backlight LED groups and support a light-load mode helps engineers reduce component count and package size while improving energy efficiency. In terms of performance, the AAT2803 can drive up to six LEDs at 180mA, allowing for independent or parallel operation of two sets of four and two LEDs for primary and secondary displays. Its AS2Cwire™ digital interface enables users to turn LEDs on or off, or set brightness levels across 16 logarithmic ranges. Additionally, the device supports four low-current settings, including a 50µA mode for ultra-low power operation. The charge pump operates in 1X, 1.5X, and 2X modes, dynamically selecting the most efficient mode based on the forward voltage and input voltage of each LED. This intelligent selection extends the time spent in 1X mode, maximizing power efficiency. Unlike many integrated solutions, the AAT2803 uses separate charge pumps for backlighting and flash, ensuring that flash performance isn’t compromised during backlighting. For flash applications, the AAT2803 delivers continuous current up to 120mA and pulse current up to 300mA. A dedicated start pin enhances system flexibility, while built-in thermal protection ensures safe operation under overload conditions. The device also features a smooth start circuit to prevent current surges and a 1MHz switching frequency, which allows for the use of small ceramic capacitors. The AAT2803 is available in a lead-free, thermally enhanced 24-pin QFN44 package, operating within a temperature range of -40°C to +80°C. Priced at $1.97 per 1,000 units, it offers an attractive solution for designers looking to optimize both performance and cost. AnalogicTech, based in Sunnyvale, California, specializes in power management semiconductors for mobile devices, including smartphones, tablets, digital cameras, and audio players. With offices across Asia and a global sales network, the company continues to innovate in the ever-evolving consumer electronics market. This press release contains forward-looking statements under the U.S. Private Securities Litigation Reform Act of 1995.
