Highland Park firefighters were dispatched to 24245 St. Johns Avenue this afternoon after workers reported a fire in the insulation between the second floor and the attic of a large, unoccupied two-story home undergoing renovation. Upon arrival, the first responding units encountered heavy smoke and upgraded the alarm to Code 4, indicating a working fire. Firefighters quickly launched an aggressive attack, successfully containing the flames to the area of origin.
Mutual aid units that responded included Highwood Truck 37, Lake Forest Engine 412, Deerfield-Bannockburn Truck 20, and Northfields Truck 29. On scene, Highland Park crews included both ambulances, all three engines, as well as the chief and battalion chief. Firefighters worked swiftly to control the blaze and prevent it from spreading further.
Photos from the scene, captured by Larry Shapiro, show the extent of the damage and the efforts of emergency responders. Additional images include fire engines, a Seagrave unit, and a Pierce engine connected to a hydrant. A Battalion Chief from Highland Park FD is also seen on duty.
