Allison Transmission Corporation Commercial Truck Hybrid Systems Receive $62.8 Million Bonus

The Allison Transmission Company , which has advantages in the development of US automotive hybrid systems, recently received US$62.8 million in grants from the US Department of Energy’s “2009 American Recovery and Reinvestment” Act to continue to design, develop, and manufacture Competitive commercial truck hybrid system.

This award decision was announced on August 6, 2009 by US President Barack Obama in a speech at the Elkhart, Indiana, state that the country should invest in production facilities for electric vehicles and their parts and components. Allison transmission manufacturers said that the Department of Energy’s award will further advance the US’ ability to manufacture hybrid systems for the commercial truck market.

The American Recovery and Reinvestment Act, signed by Obama on February 15, 2009, has a total planned investment of 787 billion U.S. dollars. Among them, new energy is one of the main areas of attack, focusing on the development of automotive hybrid technology, high-efficiency batteries, smart grids, carbon storage and carbon capture, and renewable energy such as wind and solar energy.

On the automobile side: Obama said that he will urge the government and the private sector to invest heavily in new energy technologies such as hybrid vehicles and electric vehicles, and reduce US oil consumption. A $7,000 tax credit encourages consumers to purchase energy-efficient cars, uses $4 billion in federal government funds to support automakers, and strives to achieve US sales of 1 million hybrid vehicles by 2015.

Allison Transmission provides an advanced hybrid system for the urban bus market. This product has also achieved significant development with the support of the US Department of Energy. Since 2003, Allison Transmission has produced nearly 2,300 hybrid systems that operate on buses in 126 cities. The Allison Transmission Hybrid System has cumulatively operated 143 million miles, saved approximately 7.6 million gallons of fuel, and effectively prevented the emission of approximately 75,000 tons of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere.

"The successful completion of the Allison Transmission Commercial Truck Hybrid Project will directly support the US strategic energy goals while protecting our environment, creating new jobs and reducing our dependence on foreign oil." Allison Transmission Box chairman and CEO Lawrence E. Dewey said. He added: "The Allison Transmission is grateful to individuals and organizations that support our Energy Department awards, public or private."

Working with Allison Transmission to help Allison win the Indiana delegation includes Senator Evan Bayh, US Senator Richard Lugar, US Congressman Andre Carson, US Congressman Mike Pence, and US Congressman Joe Donnelly and US Congressman Steve Buyer. At the Indiana level, there is support from the government that includes the governor of Mitch Daniels, Mitch Roob, CEO of Indiana Economic Development Corporation, and Phil Hinkle, a state legislator. Mayor Greg Ballard and City County Director Marilyn Pfisterer have also been actively promoting the products and employees of Allison Transmission.

Allison Transmission will produce a new commercial truck hybrid system in Indianapolis, Indiana. Allison plans to cooperate with leading US suppliers to produce energy storage systems and other hybrid power system components for this project.
