Chicago 2-11 Alarm fire 9-25-13

Chicago experienced a 2-11 alarm fire today at 10:34 AM on South Kostner Avenue. The structure consisted of a five-story building with a one-story addition in the rear. Workers were in the process of disconnecting a storage tank located in the basement, which contained an unknown type of adhesive that caught fire. As smoke began to fill the building, emergency crews quickly identified the source and ordered all personnel to evacuate. A Personnel Accountability Report (PAR) was conducted to ensure everyoneâ€™s safety. A Haz Mat Level I response was requested along with the 2-11 alarm. Engine 106's Mobile Ventilation Unit (MVU), designated as 9-2-3, was specially called in, as well as the Mobile Oxygen Bus, unit 8-8-11. Although no visible flames were present, thick black smoke was being forcefully expelled from the building by a large fan. The scene was dominated by heavy smoke, making it difficult for firefighters to work inside without protective gear. Larry Shapiro and Tim Olk were on-site documenting the incident.
